The ceramic - starting material is diatomite (kieselguhr =, see Wikipedia). This is a naturally arising mineral substance, mainly consisting of the silica alkaline water shells of fossil diatoms (Diatoms). These shells consist mostly of amorphous (non-crystalline) silicon dioxide (SiO2) and have an extremely microporous structure. A thousandth of a liter (1 ml) pure diatomaceous earth contains about one billion diatom shells and fragments thereof. Due to its material properties, light, highly porous and absorbent -, diatomaceous earth is a valued commodity and is used industrially, just for the production of microporous water filter elements. For this purpose, the raw ceramic material at temperatures of up to 1000 degrees Celsius is burned (sintered), giving it limited to, the estimated properties.
